Hello 2019 MSAR racers!
Thank you for registering for the fourth annual Maine Summer Adventure Race! With less than three weeks to go until the race, this update is loaded with very important information to get you ready for race day. Read this carefully!
Additional Information Needed! Balega Running Socks has stepped up as a sponsor of the 2019 Maine Summer Adventure Race and is offering every racer a free pair of the company's awesome socks! Please have all members of your team complete the survey sent out in the newsletter by Friday, June 7 so we can gather your foot sizes to send to Balega.
Race Day Schedule. Racer registration will open at 6:00 a.m. with a pre-race meeting at 7:15 a.m. and race start at 8:00 a.m. We highly recommend arriving as early as you can to registration because maps will be handed out as you register, so arriving early means you will have more time to plan your route. There is no bike drop this year; bring your bikes to the start area ready to race (with lights for nighttime etc.). Delicious hot and cold breakfast items will be available for purchase starting at 6:30 a.m. at the start location, perfect for munching on as you look over maps.
Race Headquarters and Parking. Registration is located at the Pineland Farms Outdoors Center, at 15 Farm View Drive in New Gloucester, ME. Parking is about a 5 minute walk away from registration. Take your first right after turning on to Farm View Drive (you will pass registration) and follow signs for the “conference center”. Go straight through the roundabout into the large parking lot.
Team List. Please check the team list posted on our website to ensure that all of your teammates have registered.
Mandatory Gear. Please review the gear list carefully and plan to carry all mandatory gear for the noted race segments. We reserve the right to check for mandatory gear items at any time during the race. Note that chem lights have been removed from the mandatory gear list and wetsuits have been added to the recommended (not required) items.
Paddling. Please review the gear list carefully and plan to carry all mandatory gear for the noted race segments. We reserve the right to check for mandatory gear items at any time during the race. Note that chem lights have been removed from the mandatory gear list and wetsuits have been added to the recommended (not required) items.
Paddle Section and Paddle Bag. As usual, we are very excited about our paddle section(s) for this year’s course. Completing the full paddle will require ocean paddling. High winds, big waves, strong tidal currents, boat traffic, cold water, whiteout fog, and other hazards are risks inherent to ocean paddling. These conditions can develop quickly so all teams deciding to take on these challenging points should come prepared with the necessary skills and gear. Wetsuits are not required but are recommended. Please contact us if you would like to rent a wetsuit (available through our outfitter). We will review important safety information at the racer briefing and on course. Your decision about whether to attempt the ocean CPs should begin now with an honest discussion with team members about your skill level and comfort with this type of paddle section. Notably, all ocean CPs are optional so teams can still complete the course without attempting this section. The course may be modified depending on weather conditions. Fingers crossed for smooth seas and clear skies! All racers will be paddling in solo and tandem sea kayaks this year. Paddles, PFDs, spray skirts, pumps, and paddle floats are included with each boat. However, you are welcome to bring your own paddle gear if you prefer. We are allowing all teams one team paddle bag that must hold all PFDs, paddles, and any other gear or food of your choosing. All gear must be contained within the bag or well-secured to the bag. We are not responsible for lost gear that is not sufficiently bundled together. You will see this bag at more than one point during the race so can use it for food resupply. Please do not put water in your paddle bag.
Spectators. Friends and family are welcome and encouraged to cheer you on throughout the course! We can provide more information right after the race start to interested fans. Please alert any spectators that they are not allowed to provide any assistance to your team or any other teams while the race is in progress.
Post-Race Celebration. As usual, we will hold a post-race party immediately following the race. We are excited to announce there will be a full, hot breakfast buffet sourced locally by our host location, Pineland Farms, served beginning at 8 a.m. on Sunday. Vegetarian and gluten-free options will be available. Friends and family are welcome to join with a $15 donation to cover food.
Camping and Lodging. Check out our website for camping and other lodging options as well as food recommendations. Contact us if you’re having trouble finding a place to stay.
Sponsors. We couldn’t do this without the generous support of our sponsors! Please consider supporting the businesses listed on our website as you stock up for your AR needs. We appreciate their ongoing support of our event and the sport of adventure racing!
Facebook. Please “like” our Facebook page to get updates before, during (for friends and family), and after the race!
Recommendations. Long pants may be a good choice for parts of the course to protect against thick vegetation and for helping to deter the mosquitoes and ticks out on the course. Bug protection is highly recommended, as previous MSAR racers will know! We also recommend watching the forecast carefully - temperatures may get chilly overnight.
