GENERAL INFORMATION

Are you ready for a day of adventure in the beautiful Maine wilderness?

Now in its sixth year, the Maine Summer Adventure Race promises to deliver a full day of adventure, sending racers out to explore Maine's thick pine forests, deep cold lakes and rivers, and its windy roads and trails.

The 2022 Maine Summer AR will be a 24-hour race designed to be the premier one-day race in New England. There will also be a 8-hour and 3-hour events this year for teams looking to for a shorter challenge. Teams will race nonstop by foot, bike, and boat through remote and rarely visited areas of Maine.

Registration fees for all races including includes race t-shirt, swag bag, maps, kayaks, paddles, PFDs, prizes and giveaways, facility and land-use fees, and a post-race feast,
including local fare, vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options and a featured local microbrew.

TEAM CATEGORIES

Both races will feature the following team categories:
  • Mixed premier: 3- or 4-person mixed gender teams
  • Open premier: 3- or 4-person same-sex teams
  • 2-person mixed gender
  • 2-person single-sex
  • Solos considered upon request

24-Hour race course information

  • The 24-hour race will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 16 and will end at 10 a.m. on Sunday, July 17. Check-in and map hand-out begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday at the Events Center/Market at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester, Maine. A final pre-race briefing will occur at 9:30 a.m.
  • Estimated minimum distances (in no particular order) are: 10 miles of hiking, 60 miles of biking including optional technical mountain biking, and 5 miles of paddling. Extra, optional checkpoints will add significantly to the total distances traveled in each of those disciplines. Estimated maximum distances are 30 miles of trekking, 80 miles of biking (with at least 15 miles of mountain biking on trails), and 25 miles of paddling.
  • A mountain bike is required.
  • Racers who want to attempt the full course will need to supply their own packrafts. Packrafting and non-packrafting teams will compete in the same division. Teams with packrafts will be able to access additional, optional checkpoints that teams without packrafts will not be able to access. Keep in mind that the course is large with many optional checkpoints. We anticipate that only a handful of teams will obtain all checkpoints, or "clear the course". Registered teams can log into RunSignUp to change their packrafting status. Packraft rentals are available at Packrafting Adventures (an MSAR partner) or Backcountry Packrafts. All racers will also paddle kayaks during the race.

8-hour race course information

  • The 8-hour race will begin at 8 a.m.  and end at 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 16. Check-in and map hand-out begins at 5:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Events Center/Market at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester, Maine. Teams will board buses to the start line at 6:30. A final pre-race briefing will occur at the start at 7:30 a.m.
  • Estimated minimum distances (in no particular order) are: 3 miles of hiking, 25 miles of biking including optional technical mountain biking, and 3 miles of paddling. Extra, optional checkpoints will add to the total distances traveled in each of those disciplines. Estimated maximum distances are 10 miles of trekking, 35 miles of biking, and 10 miles of paddling.
  • Mountain bikes are optional and highly recommended if you plan to attempt the entire course, as there is a section of technical mountain biking. But road bikes are fine for teams who wish to skip the mountain biking.

3-hour race course information

  • The 3-hour race will begin at 12:00 p.m. and end at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 16. Check-in and map hand-out begins at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at the Events Center/Market at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester, Maine. A final pre-race briefing will occur at 11:30 a.m.
  • The entire 3-hour course is optional so the minimum distance will be as short as your team chooses it to be. Estimated maximum distances are 3 miles of trekking and 10 miles of biking.
  • The 3-hour event is a foot- and bike-only event with no paddling on and around the Pineland Farms property. Biking will be on paved and gravel road surfaces.
  • The 3-hour event is family-friendly and appropriate for racers of all ages. Bike trailers and kids seats are welcome!
